Carmel means an orchard or garden-lawn. As a proper name 'Mount Carmel' designates a well-known mountain ridge overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in Israel. Due to its panoramic vista and luxuriant vegetation, the prophet of the Bible saw an image of God's Beauty in it and took it as a sign of God’s love and blessings for his people. It is here on this Mount that the great prophet Elijah established the worship of one, true God and meted out justice to the oppressed people. It was to this religious tradition that existed on this Mount Carmel ever at the Old Testament times that Carmelite religious congregations claim to trace back their origin."The Lord is my strength and my right."
The members of this order imbibing the spirit of the great prophets, dedicate themselves to the life of contemplation as well as service of humanity without any distinction of caste, creed, or race. Mount Carmel School is an expression of these values.
On behalf of the Carmelite OCD Provincial of Malabar Province, Thiruvananthapuram Rev.Fr. Sebastian Koodappattu OCD, the secretary- cum - councilor to the provincial contacted the then-provincial Superior of Pavitrathma province, Mother Joyce Mary, on 26 January 2001 to get to know of our willingness and consent to extend our service to Ormanjhi, in Ranchi diocese. As it was a place we were longing to enter, to spread the fragrance of the Eucharistic Lord, our provincial council decided to take up the center for our service in collaboration with the OCD fathers at Ormanjhi. Hence Sr. Jancy Maria, Sr. Anice Alappattu, and Sr. Maria Tom Kuttiyancikal started their journey to Ranchi and reached there on 29 September 2001. The convent began its functioning on 30 September at Ormanjhi, Ranchi. The main apostolate is teaching in English medium school run by the OCD fathers of Malabar Province, Thiruvanthapuram.
